I started this sketch because I wanted to draw someone beautiful...but soon realized my mistake of not choosing the 'right' subject! ( She is Alicia Silverstone, but I did not work on the likeness factor very much, here-- so you may not recognise her!) The problem was that her face did not have any shades..no gradients to work upon - so it got a little boring and I decided to speed up things and get over with it! I hate leaving something unfinished, so I did complete this sketch, but honestly, not much time was spent on this one. About 2 hours.I think I need to find better paper...this cartridge paper shows through so much that dark tones are spoiled. I can't achieve the desired smoothness... Any suggestions?

The Maharani
Maharani Gayatri Devi of Jaipur, who died last Wednesday at the age of 90. She was once included in Vogue magazine's Ten Most Beautiful Women . Very few people can look so stunningly beautiful even in their old age.One of the last remaining symbols of India's feudal past, Ms. Devi and her husband, the Maharajah of Jaipur, ruled over a fief of some two million peasants" before independence. She also participated in India's burgeoning democracy, being elected to parliament three times and serving from 1962 until 1975.
A tribute ....

This is my self portrait done in watercolrs.I can't resist sharing it with you all who don't follow my other blog!..However, to match up with this blog's ambience, I have converted it into black and white tones. If you wish to see the original, pls go to my other blog, Arti's art, Life as I see it
Two more sketches
Two more pages from my sketchbook...I scribbled them yesterday morning while watching TV. First one is a contestant from a TV show "Judge Judy.." she was pretty and glamorous, had big eyes and kept rolling them all the time!...
Second is, as many of you may know, Susan Boyle , the plain looking singing sensation of "Britain 's Got Talent " Show; who lost at the final stage. I hear that she suffered a nervous breakdown after that, and had to be hospitalized! I sympathize with her.She really had a sweet voice. But these TV shows can be cruel! You have to be thick skinned to participate in them.
I did this sketch watching a repeat telecast of her performance on stage.

from my sketchbook
I have been neglecting my sketchblog for quite sometime. Even though I have n;t really sketched anything substantial for many days, I feel the need to fill the void. Here are two quick sketches that I drew in my sketchbook on my last visit to James Park, London. The kids were busy playing in the sandpit and looked so adorable.Especially the young girl with a doll in her hand -- she was an angel!

On Mothers' Day
Here is my tribute to Mothers' day. A sketch of my mom .She has been the guiding force since my early days.We lived in a small town where art education was not available, but she always pushed me to do better, encouraging me to share my art with the world ( I being the shy one)...
Each woman who is a mother knows what does it take to be one. It means having her whole life altered so that she can provide a better life and a happy childhood to her offspring!
When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child.
- Sophia Loren
Happy Mothers' Day every mom of the world.

A sketch in Progress-1
Here I have completed the basic outline work, and started shading from the upper left corner. When drawing portraits, I go from one end to the other, from top to bottom shading the parts as close to finished as possible. This is to avoid any smudging by the hand.
This is the first layer of shading on the child's face.I use circuler strokes instead of usual anguler or cross hatch. It gives a smoother effect. After shading I use a fine cloth wrapped around my finger to smooth out the tones. Then , another round of shading if a darken tone is required.
Thats all for today...Have a nice day!
